ExtendOpera.org site news

Anonymous comments disabled

The amount of spam has been increasing again and i will be unable to deal with it in the coming weeks. For that reason anonymous comments have been disabled. Apologies for the inconvenience

Opera Mini flood

The files and code posted on this site can, as far as i know, only be used with the desktop version of Opera. So when i noticed that the past few weeks about half of the people visiting this site have been Opera Mini users, i had to wonder, what brings you here? Are there modifications that we could/should be hosting?

regards,
Zotlan

Showing related content

I added a block to the side of the site's content showing posts simmilar to the post you're visiting. For example, a visit to one status bar script  will now easily reveal other, similar content.

OpenID now supported

It is now possible to create an account through OpenID

ExtendOpera, translated

ExtendOpera now features the translate this button that lets visitors translate the site into many languages. The button uses Google's translation API but unlike Google's own service it does not redirect you and does not interfere with using the site. Supported languages include Spanish, Russian, German and Japanese.

Extensions can now be posted

Extensions

As most of you probably know by now Opera 11 will feature extensions. Opera is making a place for extensions on its own site but, as of the latest snapshot, it is also possible for extensions to be installed and updated from third party repositories. Now, the question is; are you interest in that? Should extendopera.org get a new type of content and host extensions or should it stay what it is now, a home for Opera's forgotten children. Time, i think, for a poll.

Rating content re-enabled

Just noticed that rating content has been set to disabled for the past month or so. It's now been re-enabled for all users, both logged in and anonymous.

ExtendOpera is now on Twitter

ExtendOpera now has its own Twitter channel. Whenever someone posts a new item on ExtendOpera, and a moderator has approves it, a message will be posted on the twitter channel, the same goes for changelogs and site news items like this one. Of course, those updates can already be followed through the RSS feeds, but this offers a new way for users to follow updates to the site and its contents.

The return of the domain

Extendopera.org now has its own domain name back, apologies for the wait. Since we have the correct address again i will be re-activiating the Addthis button, (more on that button here). If you are still seeing the other domain you may have to wait for your or your ISP's DNS cache to refresh.

Back once more, with new features

So, we're back, it took about a week but i think it has been worth the wait, there are a couple of very nice new features. I'll start with the highlights.

The ayes have it.

Linking content

Several people have proposed that Extendopera should start accepting links to content on other sites, as well as uploaded content. While there are definitely advantages to doing that i also see some problems. Before i continue, let me list the pros and cons, as i see them.

Pros

Downtime

As some of you may have noticed the site experienced some downtime today. This was caused by a power outage during scheduled maintenance at the data centre where this site is hosted. As you can see, we're up and running again, let's hope it stays that way.

Network maintenance

Due to maintenance by the network provider of this site's host the site may become unreachable between 00:00 and 00:07 (CET) on the first of June. This is just a heads up, if all goes well you should not notice a thing.

The return of maintenance

Having figured out what went wrong last time, i will be updating the site again over the weekend. There will also be a small new feature to the site when we return.

Maintenance failure

Gah! something went badly wrong during maintenance. Causing me to revert to a backup. Unfortunately the backup is three days old; users created, comments made and files posted between then and now have, alas, been lost.

This is something that really should not have happened and i apologise for the inconvenience.

Network problems

As you may have noticed the site has been very difficult, sometimes impossible, to reach this morning. The source of the problem is my hosting provider's network provider. This morning they were doing maintenance, which turned into a major malfunction. They've since reverted the changes they made and things appear to be working again. I hope the problem does not recur but i'm afraid i cannot guarantee it.

Spam spam spam, lovely spam.
