Linking content

Several people have proposed that Extendopera should start accepting links to content on other sites, as well as uploaded content. While there are definitely advantages to doing that i also see some problems. Before i continue, let me list the pros and cons, as i see them.

Pros

  • The site would get more content.
  • When third parties upload scripts, etc., they don't always update them on extendopera when their makers update them, this would not be a problem with linked content.
  • Authors, unwilling to maintain their work in multiple locations, might become more willing to post.
  • Links could be placed to content by authors who do not want they creations uploaded on other sites. Having those links here would make that content easier to find.

Cons

  • Linked sites could disappear or move, making the link useless, a problem that uploaded content obviously does not have.
  • Changes to the content might not be reflected in the description on Extendopera, if the person who posted it does not keep it up to date.
  • Lazy contributors might leave short, practically useless descriptions, of the site they're linking too (of course, moderation could take care of that).
  • The site could devolve into simply a list of links to sites like userscripts.org

I've been thinking it over but i'd also like your, the visitor's, opinion on the matter. So, if you'd like to voice your opinion on this please vote in the poll on the left of the page, the results can be viewed here. If you have any remarks or questions, please leave a comment.
